Through an university project we had the chance to visit the Kaniniemi Villas in the early winter. Whilst in Kuopio there was still autumn, winter waited for us when we arrived in Nurmes. The villas are in a very quiet place next to the lake and allow for a magnificient viewover the water. Leaving the city lights behind we got in touch with the cozyness of a wonderfully equipped villa. But in nighttime one can still see the lights on the other side of the lake while the moon is throwing its light on the water. In addition to relaxing and taking a break from everyday life, in summer this is the perfect location to swim and enjoy the long and sunny days.

In Nurmes we bought reindeer and fish and had an amazing dinner. We can only recommend to taste Finland’s specialities. The villas offer a variety of activities. Amongst others are playing billard, making music with multiple instruments, going offroad with an all-terain vehicle and enjoying the sauna. The owners, Kai and Anne, joined us for a match taught us some basic skills. Maybe we won. The music set included guitars, a base, drums and microphones that allow to set up a whole band playing hits from songbooks. With the all-terain vehicle we made a little trip through the forest, over big stones and fields. After an hour of shaking around we took a break with delicious coffee and traditional Finnish joulutorttus (below).
