Angela and David in Kainiemi

Five Days in Kainiemi – a stay full of activities and adventures
We, Angela and David two exchange students from Germany, had the possibility to do a project study for our university in Kainiemi. Kainiemi is situated about 15 kilometres outside the city Nurmes in the middle of the Finnish Lakeland. For us this was the first big trip outside Kuopio, which is the city where our university is located. Since we had only seen the Finnish way of life in the city till that point, this was our first chance to get an impression of the way of life in the countryside and to enjoy the beautiful nature around Kainiemi.

Besides our project study – which was about promoting the two holiday cottages situated in Kainiemi on the German market – we also had time for testing some Finnish winter activities:
So this is how we got to hike with snowshoes through the forest for the first time in our lives. Additionally, we could drive a ski-doo over the frozen lake which was also a new and exciting experience for us. Furthermore, we went cross-country skiing and learned two different ways how to fish in winter. The first way of doing it is very easy: You simply drill a hole in the ice and fish with a fishing rod. The second way of doing it, which we could test also, is already a bit more sophisticated: You strain a fishing net under the ice and check it the next day.
Our five days in Kainiemi passed very quickly and were full of experiences and adventures. We also enjoyed the Finnish landscape. Despite all the activities we did in Kainiemi, we still could relax there for example when listening to the crackling of the fire in the sauna.
